Position:    Office Assistant, Office of Student Life/The Commons Administration
Positions Available:    3 - 5
Duties:    General Description: The Office Assistants are an integral part of the team who create a professional, fun and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Office Assistants report directly to the Office Manager in the Office of Student Life. Office Assistants are customer service agents and serve as the primary greeter for the Office of Student Life and The Commons Administration. Responsibilities: 1)Provide quality customer service and information to individuals coming into the office with questions. Greet and assist guests proactively. 2)Support staff with projects involving leadership programs, cultural/spiritual programs, Greek Life, student organizations, event planning, etc. Share creative ideas with staff. Administrative duties: 1)Answer main office telephone lines for OSL and The Commons Administration. 2)Open and close the office daily; maintain a welcoming appearance of the office reception areas. 3)Sort and distribute incoming mail and package deliveries. 4)Collect key and work requests for The Commons Administration staff. Project work including, but not limited to: photocopying, faxing, filing; Stock materials in front office area- brochures, candy jar, etc. Prep equipment supplies daily – printers, fax machines; Distribute appropriate department forms and information as needed; Other duties as assigned.
     
Required skills:    Special Skill: Excellent customer service skills are required. Organizational skills are required. Experience with a PC and Microsoft Office Suite desired. Preferred if applicant can commit to two academic semesters.
     
Start Date:    Fall 2010
Hours per week:    6 - 20
Pay range:    $7.25 per hour to start

Position:    Involvement Peer
Positions Available:    3-5
Duties:    General Description: The Involvement Peer directly reports to the Coordinator for Student Organizations and Involvement in the Office of Student Life. He/she is responsible for providing support to student organizations and helping inform the campus community and prospective students about involvement opportunities and ways to make a difference at UMBC. Characteristics/Responsibilities: Develop and implement strategies to highlight existing involvement opportunities. Design and conduct presentations for prospective and new students. Create partnerships with student organizations, the First Year Council and University offices in support of involvement initiatives. Assist with compiling and researching information on ideas, products and projects to increase student involvement at UMBC. Assist Student Life personnel in coordinating and carrying out special department activities and events (including set up and break down). Provide resources for student organizations such as workshop presentations, informational guides and handouts, etc. Provide good customer service and information to individuals coming into the Student Involvement Center with questions. Serve as office receptionist Assist with clerical responsibilities such as answer telephone calls, photocopying, faxing, filing, track office supplies. Distribute incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail. Deliver on-campus items to various departments. Distribute appropriate department forms and information to individuals needing assistance. Other duties as assigned.
     
Required skills:    Special Skill: Ability to initiate and complete projects independently is essential. Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal competencies are required. Organizational skills are necessary. Experience with a PC and Microsoft Office Suite required. Involvement in a student organization or similar experience preferred. Minimum Qualifications: Prefer commitment of 2 academic semesters.
