Duties:
Work at the Special Collections Desk. Greet patrons and provide instruction on how to use Special Collections. 1.Page materials and instruct patrons on how to handle and use materials. 2.Answer the telephone, direct patron inquiries to the proper person, and take messages carefully and accurately. 3.Maintain security of the materials and Special Collections. 4.Instruct patrons on how to use the on-line catalog. 5.Instruct patrons in the use of computer equipment for scanning images. B. Assistance to the Special Collections Staff 1.Assist with photocopying. 2.Assist with archival processing. 3.Shelve books, portfolios and other materials. 4.Other duties as assigned. This position requires the ability to work with the public at the Special Collections Desk, as well as to provide instruction to patrons in the use of the on-line catalog and other computer equipment such as image scanning. In addition, archives processing and clerical support may be assigned for special projects.
Required skills:
Knowledge of computers and computer operation. Ability to learn quickly software that may be unfamiliar such as Word Perfect and dbase. Friendly positive manner. In addition, the candidate must have excellent communication skills, and the ability to listen and verbalize carefully in interacting with others. The person must be able to adhere to a schedule. They must also be able to learn Special Collections procedures, and must understand the Library of Congress filing procedures for arrangement of books on shelves.

Duties:
Reference Desk Support - The assistant will: provide answers to directional questions, offer assistance in basic research strategies, assist others in the use of catalogusmai and various academic databases, collaborate with librarians on difficult queries. Routine Maintenance of Reference Area – the assistant will: gather stray materials, re-shelve materials using appropriate systems of organization, ensure that Reference area is kept in an orderly state, return non-reference materials found in Reference area to appropriate departments, maintain order of Reference and Government Document collections by way of shelf reading. Clerical Tasks - The assistant will: aid in collection management by adding new titles to access databases and excel spreadsheets, sort and distribute mail, provide support by making photocopies, filing, and retrieving documents as requested by reference staff and faculty.
Required skills:
The assistant must have basic computer skills, including knowledge of word processing. The assistant must also demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and Verbal communication skills. Training will be provided for the layout of the reference room, various classification systems, and other assigned duties. The assistant must have the ability to work with minimal supervision and pay attention to detail. The ability to lift heavy books, push book trucks, and shelve materials at various heights is required. Other duties as assigned may require the student to have a basic understanding of how information is organized, technical competence with computers, databases, word processing and excel spreadsheets.
